Electric vehicle ownership in the UK is growing rapidly, and a home charger is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your EV topped up. When paired with a solar panel system, you can charge your car with free electricity generated from your own roof — turning your morning commute into a zero-cost, zero-emission journey.

At Lumos Energy, we specialise in solar-integrated EV charging. Rather than simply fitting a charger to your wall, we design a charging solution that works intelligently with your existing or planned solar system. Smart chargers like the Zappi and Ohme can detect when your solar panels are generating surplus energy and automatically divert it to your car — meaning you charge for free whenever the sun is shining.

For Wiltshire homeowners, the economics are compelling. A typical EV uses around 3,500 kWh per year. If you are generating that from solar panels that are already paid for, you are effectively driving for free. Even without solar, a 7kW home charger costs around 7p per mile on an overnight tariff — compared to roughly 16p per mile for petrol.

We install all major smart charger brands and our NICEIC-approved electricians ensure every installation meets the latest IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and OZEV grant requirements. From initial assessment to app configuration, we handle the entire process.

EV Charging FAQs

Yes. A solar-integrated EV charger like the Zappi or Ohme can detect surplus solar generation and divert it directly to your car. A typical 4kW solar system generates enough to cover 8,000-10,000 miles of driving per year — effectively free fuel.

A dedicated 7kW home charger fully charges most electric cars in 4-8 hours, depending on battery size. A 3-pin plug socket takes 12-24 hours and is not recommended for regular use. Smart chargers can schedule charging during cheap overnight tariffs or solar surplus periods.

The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant provides up to £350 towards the cost of a home EV charger for qualifying properties — typically rental properties and flats. Owner-occupiers of detached, semi-detached, or terraced houses are no longer eligible, but the charger remains a cost-effective investment.

We install leading smart chargers including the myenergi Zappi (best for solar integration), Ohme Home Pro, Easee One, and Andersen A2. All offer smart scheduling, solar divert capability, and smartphone app control. We recommend the best option for your specific setup.
