Home Battery Storage Cost Guide 2026

Full price comparison across 5 kWh, 10 kWh, and 15 kWh home battery systems — with honest payback calculations and brand comparisons from an active installer.

By Matt Butler 7 min read April 2026

Home battery storage costs have fallen significantly over the last five years. In 2021, a 10 kWh battery system cost upward of £9,000 installed. In 2026, the equivalent system costs £4,200–£5,800 when installed alongside new solar panels at 0% VAT — and the technology has improved substantially, with better monitoring, longer warranties, and higher cycle counts.

Below we give you the honest numbers — wholesale prices, installation costs, and realistic payback figures based on our actual installations in Wiltshire and Somerset.

What Is and Isn't Included in Battery Prices

All prices quoted above include:

  • The battery unit and its integrated inverter (for AC-coupled systems)
  • Installation by an MCS certified electrician
  • Grid connection notification (G99/G100 where required)
  • App setup and monitoring configuration
  • 10–12 year manufacturer battery warranty

They do not include optional extras such as additional protection devices, three-phase configurations, or whole-home energy management systems (add £500–£1,500 for advanced setups).

The VAT Situation in 2026

The key financial variable is VAT. Battery storage installed alongside new solar panels qualifies for 0% VAT until March 2027. A standalone retrofit battery attracts 20% VAT immediately. On a 10 kWh system at £5,000 material cost, that is £1,000 saved by installing battery with solar versus waiting. See our retrofit battery guide for the full analysis if you already have solar panels. And our battery ROI analysis covers the full scenario comparison across different household types.

We install battery storage throughout Wiltshire and Somerset. Our service areas include Melksham, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Bath, Frome, and many more.
